The story is reflecting the appeal of the Westernized world set in the 1920s. During the that time Japan was showing American movies and the Nipponese were playperforming oftentimes social as the horse opera cultures such as having social dances, wearing westbound clothes, eating beef and acting overmuch liberalized. This can be related as to how the Japanese as a whole started to take in prevailing westerly culture slowly as Joji took in Naomi and started to teach her westbound ways slowly. This consumer culture treasured to have the most modern trends much as Naomi wanted in the story. As the story progressed Joji was change state more obedient to Naomi like Japan was becoming more reliable on the resources and culture of the west.
